VANCOUVER, Oct. 21, 2014 /CNW/ - Gourmet grocer Urban Fare has done it again, providing its Vancouver and Kelowna customers with a chance to own the latest food innovation before anyone else in the country. Pumpkins grown in molds to look like Frankenstein, are now on sale at Urban Fare's five locations for $79.13 each.
The pumpkins, known as 'Pumpkinsteins', are organically grown in California by farmer Tony Dighera who experimented with 27 varieties of pumpkins before finally perfecting his creation just in time for Halloween.
Pumpkinsteins make the ideal one step, mess-free Jack O'lanterns. When Pumpkinsteins are hollowed out, the eyes will glow if a lit candle is placed inside.
Urban Fare is the only place in Canada where you can buy a Pumpkinstein. The retailer is selling them for $79.13 each. The Pumpkinstein has made international headlines in the recent days after being sold at a few US grocery stores for $125. "We worked with the famer to get a good price on these Pumpkinsteins so that Urban Fare customers could own one before anyone else." says Urban Fare Director, Allan Aikman. "This is a great chance to own a piece of food history."
Quick Facts:
- Pumpkinsteins are grown by Tony Dighera on his 40-acre organic farm in Fillmore, California.
- Organically grown without any GMOs.
- Pumpkinsteins are fully ripe and edible.
- If not carved, Pumpkinsteins will remain fresh for 4-6 weeks after Halloween.
