An app to help with trip-planning and enhance user experience while navigating The Great Trail
MONTREAL, Oct. 13, 2016 /CNW Telbec/ - Available today, The Great Trail app is designed to make exploring the Trail easier and more rewarding than ever. Developed by Trans Canada Trail (TCT), the new app is a major advancement in TCT's efforts to enhance Trail-user experience, and provide up-to-date information to help with trip-planning.
The Great Trail app features:
- An Activity Tracker
- Tools to measure distance and elevation of a planned route
- An interactive map that shows points of interest, including parking, trailheads and rest areas
- User photos of specific trails
- The ability to share journey experiences on social networks
Designed for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, The Great Trail app is now available for download in Apple's App Store.
How it works
Using Esri Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology, the app allows users to track their activity, and pinpoints a user's proximity to the nearest section of The Great Trail. By integrating with Google Places, it identifies points of interest along the way, including amenities like parking and restaurants. It also shows users how to make their way from section to section, making seamless connections between The Great Trail's various interconnected trails, including some of the more remote sections. Many of these sections have yet to be added to other hiking apps or Google Maps.
From now on, users can better prepare for their outings and get a sense of a trail's length and difficulty. The app also enables users to place pins between map points to see point-to-point elevation gains/losses, and determine exactly where they are on the Trail, features that enhance safety.
And why not commemorate a journey by uploading photos and sharing on social media? That's also possible thanks to the App.
Look for exciting new developments with the app in early 2017, including availability for Android.
Trans Canada Trail: connecting The Great Trail in 2017
It began as a bold dream in 1992: the idea of creating a trail that would be a gift from Canadians to Canadians. Since then, TCT – a not-for-profit organization – has been working with donors, partners, governments and volunteers to create an epic trail of trails offering a wide range of outdoor experiences on both land and water routes, on greenway, waterway and roadway. Every Canadian province and territory is home to its own stretch of The Great Trail, which is owned and operated at the local level.
TCT's goal is to have The Great Trail connected from coast to coast to coast in 2017, for Canada's 150th anniversary of Confederation celebrations. Visit TheGreatTrail.ca for more information.
