TORONTO, June 12, 2017 /CNW/ - Following more than 10 years as a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, including as Team Leader of the Commercial List in Toronto, the country's leading commercial court, the Honourable Frank J.C. Newbould, Q.C. has joined Thornton Grout Finnigan LLP (TGF) as Counsel to the firm, and the roster of Arbitration Place as a Member Arbitrator.
"My years on the bench – and on the Commercial List in particular – have taught me that there is no 'one size fits all' approach to dispute resolution" said Frank Newbould. "I intend to bring this approach to my arbitration and mediation practice at Arbitration Place, where Kim Stewart and her team have built out Canada's leading arbitration facilities. In addition, I'm looking forward to joining the team of leading lawyers at TGF in my new role as Counsel to the firm. The creativity that TGF brings to complex litigation and restructuring matters makes it a very appealing environment for me, and I look forward to working closely with my new colleagues on the cutting-edge of Canadian insolvency law and commercial litigation."
"After more than a decade on the bench, Frank's legacy as one of Canada's leading commercial judges is well-earned" added The Honourable Warren K. Winkler, former Chief Justice of Ontario and a fellow Member Arbitrator at Arbitration Place. "I have no doubt that he will bring enormous value to TGF's lawyers and clients, and to the parties and counsel appearing before him in his new role as arbitrator and mediator."
As a judge, counsel, and arbitrator, Mr. Newbould has earned a reputation as a "giant" in commercial law. As a judge, he presided over a variety of complex and high profile cases including Canadian and cross-border insolvency proceedings, corporate reorganizations and other commercial disputes. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he acted in many large and complex commercial matters and was regularly cited in directories including Chambers Global, the International Who's Who of Business Lawyers and the Lexpert / American Lawyer Guide to the 500 Leading Lawyers in Canada. In 2016 Canadian Lawyer magazine named him one of the Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers in Canada.
"As Canada's premier arbitration facility, we take great pride in offering a roster of arbitrators and mediators that is second to none", said Kimberley Stewart, CEO of Arbitration Place. "Justice Newbould is a perfect fit at Arbitration Place, and I know that counsel and parties considering arbitration will benefit from his decades of experience resolving disputes fairly and efficiently."
"Frank Newbould has been instrumental in the advancement of insolvency law and complex litigation matters for many years in Canada and internationally, having been involved in a number of precedent-setting cases as a judge and a lawyer," said Robert Thornton on behalf of the partners of Thornton Grout Finnigan. "We believe Frank and TGF are a perfect fit and we're delighted that he chose us among his many options. We're thrilled to work with him in this new role and to have an opportunity to draw on his deep expertise and share his strategic insights as we continue our mission to be Canada's litigation and restructuring powerhouse."
