The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada and Marble Slab launch Cones For Cures This Summer
LLSC & Marble Slab Unite in Mission to Focus on Blood Cancer Cures
TORONTO, Aug. 1, 2014 /CNW/ - The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) is working with national partners across Canada to realize a world without blood cancers through The Light The Night® (LTN) Walk (www.LightTheNight.ca ). Together with LLSC, partners are raising awareness and making a positive impact on the lives of patients, by literally shining a spotlight on the need to raise funds for treatments and cures. During 11 inspirational evening National walks, supporters form fundraising teams carrying illuminated lanterns to bring light to the dark world of cancer.
The Light The Night Walks are a key source of funds to The LLSC, which benefit the development and delivery of breakthrough treatments and cures for blood cancers as well as supporting patients and their caregivers through their cancer experience. Despite advances in survival rates, about half of blood cancer patients do not survive, so more funding is needed to advance research and ensure access to treatments to help save more lives.
"Through the good work of LLSC, our colleagues around the world and the support of dedicated partners such as Marble Slab, survival rates for children diagnosed with the most common form of leukemia increased from 3% to over 90% since the 1960s", states Shelagh Tippet-Fagyas, President of LLSC. "Our researchers are making enormous strides in breakthrough treatments and cures for blood cancers. Funds raised are invested in lifesaving research and providing patients with education and support."
Between August 1st and August 17th, Marble Slab Creamery will be raising funds in all their stores across Canada through their Cones for Cures campaign to benefit the LLSC's 'Light The Night' Walk. After raising over $30,000 in 2013, the Creamery hopes to more than double their impact in 2014 and reach an incredible fundraising goal of $65,000, by soliciting customers and asking them to help END BLOOD CANCER by purchasing a paper cone at the point of sale.
During the leisurely Light The Night walks, those who raise $100 or more will become a Champion For Cures and get the honour of carrying an illuminated lantern - white for patients or survivors, red for supporters and gold lanterns in memory of loved ones lost. Thousands of walkers form a community of caring and together, take steps for cures.
