Canada is one of two markets worldwide to receive the entire 1824 Series, an innovative new range of single malt whiskies
TORONTO, June 20, 2013 /CNW/ - The winds of change are blowing through Speyside, Scotland. The Macallan, known worldwide for its innovative approach to whisky making, is introducing The Macallan 1824 Series, an exceptional new range of single malt whiskies, to Canada.
The Macallan 1824 Series includes four outstanding marques, Gold, Amber, Sienna and Ruby. Bob Dalgarno, The Macallan Whisky Maker, created The Macallan 1824 Series by selecting whisky from a broad range of casks chosen specifically for the natural colour, nose and character they impart.
The 1824 Series is 100 per cent matured in sherry oak casks from Spain. The casks chosen for the series deliver a gradation of colour from light to dark, with the wood character defining each marque's flavour, moving from lighter, lemon citrus notes to richer, dried fruit notes. As the whiskies become darker and richer, the pool of casks able to deliver this character, become scarcer.
Historically, age has been the primary indicator consumers have used to navigate around single malt whiskies. However, the 1824 Series now allows two of the brand's six pillars, maturation in exceptional oak sherry casks and natural colour to act as primary indicators of character and style.
"The Macallan world of colour is the true inspiration of the 1824 Series," said Bob Dalgarno, Whisky Maker, The Macallan. "Using colour to drive and define a whisky differs dramatically from the conventional age approach, allowing us to explore different casks and take a more flexible approach with our stock."
Grounded in an unwavering commitment to sourcing the very best oak sherry casks, the most expensive in the industry, The Macallan 1824 Series showcases the signature style of The Macallan. Each profile is designed to celebrate a different occasion and whisky lovers will be sure to find their favourite - whether it is Gold on a summer day or Ruby by the fire on a cold winter night.
"In Canada, we have seen strong growth in the whisky category," said Ivano Taranto, Market Manager, Canada, The Edrington Group. "Single malts are growing at a rate of 15 to 17 per cent annually. We are proud Canada was chosen to launch the entire 1824 range, as this decision speaks to our sophistication as a whisky market and the Canadian consumer's keen understanding and appreciation for premium Scotch."
The Macallan 1824 Series, Gold, Amber, Sienna and Ruby, will be available across Canada beginning mid-June 2013. Specific timing and scope of availability will vary by region and retail outlet.

About The Macallan®
Founded in 1824, The Macallan is one of the world's most admired and awarded single malt whiskies. The reputation of The Macallan is based on a product of outstanding quality and distinctive character, founded upon a set of guiding principles, the Six Pillars. An obsession with quality has been the hallmark of The Macallan since it's founding by Alexander Reid on a plateau above the river Spey in north-east Scotland. The distillery is surrounded by a 150-hectare estate, with Easter Elchies House, a Highland Manor built in 1700, at its heart.
Traditionally known for maturation in sherry seasoned oak casks, The Macallan's range of outstanding single malts include: Sherry Oak, matured in Spanish oak casks seasoned with sherry; Fine Oak, matured both in sherry casks of Spanish and American Oak and in American oak casks seasoned with bourbon; the 1824 Collection, exclusive to Global Travel Retail and the 1824 Series built on the principle of natural colour. In addition, The Macallan is well known for its great range of vintage whiskies, dating back to 1926, and is considered the most sought after of all single malts among collectors and connoisseurs at auction.
In November 2010, The Macallan set a staggering new Guinness World Record™ for the "most expensive whisky sold at auction". The Macallan in Lalique 64 year old: Cire Perdue was sold for $460,000 and every single penny of this was donated to charity: water to help fund life changing clean water projects in the developing world. This was arguably the defining moment in the recent history of The Macallan, but one which reinforces its position as on of the world's greatest whiskies.
