The Mayor of Montréal joins the Mayor of Chicago and the Mayor of Paris at the Chicago Urban Waterways Forum Français
MONTRÉAL, March 12, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ - The Mayor of Montréal, the Honourable Denis Coderre, also President of Metropolis, the world association of major metropolises, and President of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, will travel to Chicago on March 12 and 13 to participate in the Chicago Urban Waterways Forum.
At the invitation of the Co-Chairs, the Mayor of Chicago, Mr. Rahm Emanuel, and the Mayor of Paris, Mrs. Anne Hidalgo, Mr. Coderre will take an active part in this international event bringing together the mayors of many cities from across the world, including those of Cape Town (South Africa), Gothenburg (Sweden), Haifa (Israel), Lahore (Pakistan), Mexico City (Mexico), Milan (Italy) and Shenyang (People's Republic of China), as well as those of several American cities including Baltimore, Buffalo, Dallas, Detroit, Memphis, Nashville and New Orleans.
Issues related to water management and development of shorelines and watercourses in urban areas will be discussed in terms of economic development, the protection of the environment and the re-appropriation of shorelines by the population.
"After our success at COP 21 and our entry into the C-40 Organization, Montréal holds a prominent place at the international level when one talks about questions of climate change and the importance of planning and building our cities today to meet the needs of tomorrow," said Mr. Coderre.
"Urban diplomacy continues to grow at the international level, and with good reason. It allows local decision makers to discuss in great depth, because cities face similar issues, wherever they are located, and I know that Montréal's contribution will be appreciated." he added.
Investing in water management
The Mayor of Montreal will present the project to construct an ozone disinfection plant at the J.-R.-Marcotte treatment complex. This is a world first in terms of wastewater treatment capacity. Ozone disinfection will eliminate 99% of bacteria and between 96% and 99% of viruses. Water returned to the river will be in a state close to what it was when it was drawn in for supply.
Inauguration of the major work Impulsion by the Quartier des spectacles Partnership at Navy Pier in Chicago
Mr. Coderre will take advantage of his trip to the "Windy City" to visit, along with his Chicago counterpart Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the interactive installation Impulsion (a series of giant, lighted, musical slides) that will be presented from March 10 to May 21 2017, at Navy Pier in Chicago. This work, created by the firms Lateral Office and CS Design, was presented as part of the Luminothérapie exhibition at Place des festivals in December 2015. It then travelled to London, England; Lugano, Switzerland; Brussels, Belgium; and now to Chicago.
