The Musée d'art contemporain and the Opéra de Montréal partner to make a
(lyrical) scene at the Journées de la culture on Sunday, September 26, 2010
MONTREAL, Sept. 16 2010 /CNW Telbec/ - For this year's Journées de la culture, the Musée d'art contemporain and the Opéra de Montréal are making a scene... a lyrical scene, that is, out of a selection of paintings by Paul-Émile Borduas. In a mini-recital, with piano, on Sunday, September 26 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., singers from the Opéra de Montréal's Atelier lyrique will perform some of the loveliest excerpts from the lyric repertoire, inspired by works by Borduas, the focus of the day. The Musée will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and admission to all exhibitions and activities will be free.

To mark the fiftieth anniversary of Borduas's death, the Musée is holding an exhibition in tribute to this great artist, a pillar of modernity in Québec and principal author of the group manifesto Refus global. Entitled Borduas: Les frontières de nos rêves ne sont plus les mêmes, the show features sixty or so pieces produced by Borduas between 1924 and 1960. In addition, the presentation includes works by contemporary artists François Lacasse, Guy Pellerin, Roland Poulin and Irene F. Whittome who, together with curator Josée Bélisle, have also made their own selections of the master's works.
On Sunday, September 26 at 2 p.m., museum-goers will have an opportunity to meet artists/curators François Lacasse and Guy Pellerin, who will share their choices with the public and talk about the decisive role played by Borduas in the development of their practices. Schedule: 2 p.m.. Running time: about 30 minutes. In French.
All afternoon, educators will be on hand in the exhibition galleries to answer visitors' questions and discuss Borduas's approach and that of the artists/guest curators. Schedule: continuously from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. In French and English.

Art workshops for all, with family or friends, will be offered on this magnificent day devoted to Borduas. Inspired by his 1954 work La magie des signes, visitors to the Journées de la culture will be invited to paint an abstract image in watercolour, on Sunday, September 26. Schedule: 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. In French and English.
The Musée d'art contemporain is a provincially owned corporation funded by the Ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine du Québec. It receives additional funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Canada Council for the Arts.
