The Government of Canada awards over $44,000 to the Société de développement de L'Anse-Saint-Jean for the marketing of the largest alpine skiing event in Canada
QUÉBEC, March 29, 2019 /CNW Telbec/ - Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED)
Some 200 or so national and international calibre athletes are gathered together at the Station touristique Mont-Édouard where the National Alpine Championships hosted by the Le Fjord-du-Saguenay RCM are taking place. With its super-G, giant slalom, slalom and alpine combined events, this major competition attracts fans from all walks of life, as well as foreign visitors and journalists, to L'Anse-Saint-Jean.
To ensure the overall success of this competition taking place in Mont-Édouard—which boasts the La Desjardins run, the only run in Quebec certified by the International Ski Federation (FIS) for the presentation of super G events—the Société de développement de L'Anse-Saint-Jean, a non-profit organization, will receive a $44,078 non-repayable contribution from the Government of Canada.
The funding, which was announced by Richard Hébert, MP for Lac-Saint-Jean and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Small Business and Export Promotion, will be used to support the promotion of these unparalleled sports events outside Quebec and abroad, and will also help showcase the winter attractions of this region of Quebec around the world.
Tourism provides an excellent economic development opportunity for Canada. Federal funding for sports events such as these reflects the Government of Canada's commitment to support activities that generate significant economic benefits and media spinoff in the regions where the events are held.
