The National Magazine Awards Foundation Announces the Nominations for the 37th National Magazine Awards Français
TORONTO, May 1, 2014 /CNW/ - The National Magazine Awards Foundation (NMAF) is pleased to announce the finalists for its 37th annual National Magazine Awards, including the three nominees for the prestigious Magazine of the Year award. Visit magazine-awards.com to view the list of all nominations.
From nearly 2,000 individual entries received nationwide, the NMAF's 238 volunteer judges nominated a total of 376 submissions from 92 different Canadian magazines for awards in 48 written, visual, integrated and special categories. The Gold, Silver and Honourable Mention awards will be announced at The Carlu in Toronto on June 6, at the 37th annual National Magazine Awards gala presented by CDS Global. The NMAF thanks its corporate sponsors Accenture, GE Canada, Manulife Financial, RBC and Reader's Digest Foundation for their generous financial support of the event. The 3 finalists for the coveted Magazine of the Year award, which is presented to the magazine that most consistently engaged, surprised and served the needs of its readers in 2013, are: Azure, Cottage Life and Nouveau Projet.
Nominated for Tablet Magazine of the Year are Canadian Business, Sportsnet, and The Hockey News. The nominees for Magazine Website of the Year are Hazlitt, Maclean's and Torontoist.
This year's recipient of the Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement, which was announced on April 30, is Kim Jernigan, former editor of The New Quarterly.
Leading all magazines with 35 nominations for this year's National Magazine Awards is The Walrus, followed by L'actualité (23), Report on Business (21), Maclean's (18) and Toronto Life (18).

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE NOMINATIONS
Eighteen Bridges, MoneySense and Outdoor Canada secured five nominations each for single categories (Essays, Service: Personal Finance & Business and How to, respectively). Curtis Gillespie leads all individual finalists with five nominations in written categories for his work in Eighteen Bridges and Western Living. Nicholas Hune-Brown is nominated four times for written work in Toronto Life, Reader's Digest and The Grid, followed by Jonathan Trudel, Eric Reguly, Charles Wilkins, Ray Ford and Catherine Dubé, who all garnered three nominations. In visual and integrated categories, The Grid's art director, Vanessa Wyse, is nominated five times in the new Infographics category and three times for Best Art Direction of a Single Magazine Article. In addition, photographer Chris Nicholls is nominated five times for his work for FASHION Magazine and Dress to Kill, while art director Domenic Macri secured four nominations on behalf of Report of Business.
The 10 finalists for the best Canadian Magazine Cover of 2013 come from BCBusiness, Chatelaine, FASHION Magazine, L'actualité, Maclean's, Report on Business, Toronto Life, Sub-terrain and Western Living.
There are 8 finalists for the award for Best Single Issue: Azure (Sept 2013), Cottage Life (The BBQ Issue), depict Magazine (Heritage Chic), Rotman Management (Fall 2013: The Legacy Issue), Spacing (10th anniversary Issue), The Grid (Third Annual Chef's Guide to Toronto), Toronto Life (The Money Issue) and The Walrus (Tenth Anniversary Issue).
The 3 promising young writers nominated for Best New Magazine Writer are Suzannah Showler (Maisonneuve), Liz Windhorst Harmer (The New Quarterly) and Catherine McIntyre (This Magazine).
Gold and Silver awards will be handed down on June 6 in 24 written categories, 12 visual categories and 7 integrated categories. All other finalists will receive Honourable Mentions. Winners will also be celebrated in 5 special categories: Outstanding Achievement, Best New Magazine Writer, Magazine Website of the Year, Tablet Magazine of the Year, and Magazine of the Year.
Gold award winners in written, visual and integrated categories (except Best Single Issue) receive a cash prize of $1000; Silver winners $500. The winner of Best New Magazine Writer receives a cash prize of $500.

FOUNDATION AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT
The Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement will be presented to Kim Jernigan, former editor of The New Quarterly. The NMAF is honoured to celebrate Kim's exceptional contributions to the Canadian magazine community by naming her the recipient of this award, which is the most prestigious individual prize presented each year since the NMAF's inception in 1990.
As a Master's student in Canadian literature at the University of Waterloo in 1981, Kim volunteered at the offices of the fledgling publication, which had been founded earlier that year by novelist Harold Horwood. In 1984 Kim succeeded Harold as editor of TNQ—also a volunteer position—and energetically guided the publication toward its place as one of Canada's best and most admired literary magazines. During her years as editor, TNQ was nominated for 44 National Magazine Awards, winning eight Gold and six Silver medals. Writers have praised her skillful editorial dexterity and tireless commitment to providing notes and feedback much as they have her cheerful promotion of their work. Miranda Hill of Quill & Quire described this mutual devotion between editor and writer as "The Jernigan Effect."
In her final year as editor, TNQ garnered eight National Magazine Awards nominations—the most ever by a literary magazine—and saw a young writer, Sierra Skye Gemma, win for Best New Magazine Writer. It is to her enduring credit that Kim has stewarded a small literary magazine towards not only financial stability and critical success, but also to a position as incubator of emerging talent and champion of literary arts in Canada.
Commended by her peers for her generosity, her integrity, her leadership and her contagious passion for Canadian literature, Kim Jernigan continues to serve as a mentor for TNQ and an inspiration to many young writers and editors.
