The Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec awards the 2013 Prix Génie innovation to the exp inc. team for the photocatalytic gas treatment (PGT) project

MONTREAL, April 9, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - The Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec awarded the 2013 Prix Génie innovation to the exp. inc. team for the photocatalytic gas treatment (PGT) project. Stéphane Chabot, Eng., who is one of the inventors of the PGT process and in charge of its execution at exp. inc., received the award on behalf of his team at the 2013 Gala de l'excellence, during the OIQ's Annual Conference. "Engineers must contribute to sustainable development through innovation; exp inc. has applied this concept and brought honour to the profession," stated Daniel Lebel, Eng., PMP, President of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, at the award presentation ceremony held last night in Montreal.

Contracted by wood panel manufacturer Uniboard to design a new air pollution control system at one of its plants in the United States, exp invented the photocatalytic gas treatment (PGT) process. This process is used to destroy water-soluble organic compounds, such as formaldehyde and methanol, that are present in flue gases. The PGT process uses chemical rather than thermal oxidation and does not generate additional greenhouse gases like incinerators. PGT technology works in highly diluted environments composed of 99% water, does not produce solid waste, discharges very little water and reduces CO₂ emissions.

The process meets the Maximum Achievable Control Technology standards of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and costs very little to use. PGT, which is patented in Canada and the United States, has received many awards, including the Schreyer Award from the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies of Canada.

The goal of the Prix Génie innovation is to encourage innovative engineering by recognizing its value, both in terms of the results achieved and the efforts made. Innovative engineering rewarded by this award must absolutely help improve the quality of human life and reflect the fundamental values of the engineering profession, which are competence, responsibility, social commitment and ethics.
