The Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec awards the 2015 Prix Génie innovation to the FLIR Radars team for its Ranger R20SS radar Français
MONTREAL, May 14, 2015 /CNW Telbec/ - The Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec awarded the 2015 Prix Génie innovation to FLIR Radars for its Ranger R20SS project. Michel Pelletier, Eng., Ph. D., Engineering Manager, received the award on behalf of FLIR Radars' team of engineers at the 2015 Soirée de l'excellence en génie, which was held in conjunction with the OIQ's Annual Conference.
FLIR Radars' team has created an innovative perimeter surveillance radar with unrivalled flexibility. The Ranger R20SS can detect a pedestrian at more than 10 km away and a vehicle at over 20 km away. It can be used for both land and maritime operations; it is fairly compact and robust for use on patrol vehicles, but light enough to be used on the ground by two people for tactical missions.
It owes its effectiveness to an electronic antenna with multiple components and digital beam synthesis, which increases its detection speed 20 to 50 times without sacrificing sensitivity. The Ranger R20SS also includes advanced detection and tracking algorithms so that it can automatically adapt to different environments and eliminate false alarms.
Designed and produced at FLIR Radars in Laval, the R20SS offers an unprecedented performance in detecting intrusions on sensitive sites such as airports, energy production plants and borders. In addition, since it emits power continuously rather than in pulses, the R20SS is safe for humans.
The goal of the Prix Génie innovation is to encourage innovative engineering by recognizing its value, both in terms of the results achieved and the efforts made. Innovative engineering rewarded by this prize must help improve the quality of human life and reflect the fundamental values of the engineering, which are competence, ethics, responsibility and social commitment.
