The Quebec Mining Association and the Quebec Mineral Exploration Association
support Minister's decision to refuse moratorium on uranium
QUEBEC, Aug. 18 /CNW Telbec/ - As the Parliamentary Commission on Bill 79 studies amendments to the Mining Act, the Quebec Mining Association (AMQ) and the Quebec Mineral Exploration Association (AEMQ) wish to reiterate their opposition to a possible moratorium on uranium exploration and mining in Quebec and welcome the decision by Serge Simard, Minister for Natural Resources and Wildlife, to reject such a moratorium.
While the mineral industry is sensitive to public concerns, it opposes demands by some groups calling for a moratorium on any development involving uranium in Quebec. Industry representatives deplore the erroneous information circulating about the uranium industry, especially with respect to its public health risks. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), which regulates this industry's operations closely, has clearly indicated that uranium exploration and mining do not pose a significant public health risk. The same applies to radon levels near mine sites, which are comparable to those occurring naturally in proximity to these sites.
All companies involved in the exploration and mining of uranium ore are subject to stringent environmental regulations. They are required to restore sites and manage mining waste in a safe manner. As well, they subscribe to the principle of social acceptability and as such, they inform the public and work closely with communities, often partnering in their projects.
Canada is the world's second largest uranium producer, with 21% of the global market. In Saskatchewan, uranium generates wealth for the people of the province, and efforts to increase production are being stepped up. Quebec, which has significant potential for uranium on its territory, should not be prevented from developing its mineral resources responsibly.
