OTTAWA, May 18, 2018 /CNW/ - It's a milestone year for the 2018 Mastercard Memorial Cup, and The Royal Canadian Legion is once again a strong supporter of the event being held from May 18-27 in Regina. The hockey tournament brings together elements that are also of great importance to the Legion: friendship, community, sport and Remembrance.
"The Memorial Cup trophy was originally dedicated to the Veterans of the First World War," says Dominion President David Flannigan. "Since we're recognizing the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, and of the tournament itself, there is added significance this year." In 2010 the Cup was rededicated to all fallen Canadian military personnel.
Saskatchewan Command's Provincial President Lorne Varga was invited to take part in the first puck drop and the Legion will have a presence throughout the tournament. The Canadian Hockey League is holding an online auction with proceeds going to the Legion's Poppy Trust Fund. Military-themed commemorative jerseys worn during the tournament will be up for grabs and funds raised will help support our Veterans.
"We are proud to be part of this special event," says Flannigan.
