TORONTO, Nov. 10, 2015 /CNW/ - Visitors to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair (RAWF) are very curious about the many food displays. One of the most fascinating is the mobile greenhouse courtesy of Nature Fresh Farms of Leamington. The unit is designed for educational purposes and the display at The Royal features two colours of peppers and several kinds of tomatoes. A live bee pollination exhibit is also part of the demonstration.
"The craziest comment people make is: 'Those aren't real!' in reference to the peppers," says Jeff Gagnon, Nature Fresh's food safety coordinator. "This unit is designed to educate – we take it to schools and grocery stores. We want to get people interested in nutrition and talking about the safety of greenhouse systems." He says the unit also attracts gardeners who are considering ways to increase their own production through the winter.
Nature Fresh produces English cucumbers, mini-cucumbers, several varieties of tomatoes and three colours of peppers under 132 acres of glass. The company grows over 350 varieties of peppers and tomatoes and it evaluates new varieties for taste and shelf life to determine if they will be a good fit in the greenhouse.
"People are hungry for the truth about where their food comes from," Gagnon continues. "Our food is safe and secure and environmentally responsible." Nature Fresh can be found in the "For The Love Of Food" exhibit area at RAWF.
The Royal is supported in part by the City of Toronto and the Province of Ontario.
The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair is the world's largest combined indoor agricultural and equestrian show. This year, the 93rd Royal Agricultural Winter Fair runs November 6-15, 2015 at Exhibition Place, Toronto.
