TORONTO, Dec. 14, 2015 /CNW/ - The Salvation Army is offering clothing vouchers as part of a welcome package for refugees arriving in Canada. These vouchers can be redeemed at Salvation Army Thrift Stores and will help provide the additional clothing needed by newcomers as they settle in the country. To coincide with the arrival of newcomers from Syria, The Salvation Army has created a customized clothing voucher that includes instructions in both English and Arabic.
"The Salvation Army provides assistance to over 1.8 million vulnerable people in Canada each year, including refugees and other newcomers to Canada, so we are already mobilized to help those individuals and families from Syria who may require additional support," says Commissioner Susan McMillan, Territorial Commander for The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda.
As Syrian refugees arrive as permanent residents and settle across the country, The Salvation Army anticipates that it will provide additional practical assistance in a variety of ways depending on the needs and capacities of the communities welcoming them. The Salvation Army is active in over 400 communities in Canada, so the organization is well-positioned to partner with other agencies across the country in meeting the needs of our newest residents.
Those wishing to donate clothing are encouraged to contact the closest Salvation Army Thrift Store for drop-off information. Thrift Store locations can be found by using the locator feature on SalvationArmy.ca or by visiting ThriftStore.ca. Financial donations can also be made at SalvationArmy.ca/refugees or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY.
