It's time to get the party started and ignite clubgoers across Canada 15 minutes at a time, as Red Bull Thre3style officially begins its search for the country's Best Party Rocker DJ. Hitting over 20 cities across Canada, Red Bull Thre3style will feature the best local DJs throwing down their best party sets. The challenge: each DJ needs to deliver 15 minutes of sonic infamy that incorporates a minimum of 3 genres of music. The constant: a pulsating, all-in all-out crowd. DJs from all across Canada will battle it out to make it through to the Red Bull Thre3style Canadian Finals, which is set for May 26, 2012 in Halifax, NS. Making its way to the East Coast for the very first time, the Red Bull Thre3style National Finals will takeover with talent from all over the country - from Dubstep, to Pop, from Hip Hop to Rock.
The search will kick off with 18 qualifying events and ultimately 5 Red Bull Thre3style regional finals, which will allow the winning DJs to compete in a major city to some of the biggest and liveliest audiences of their careers, on their way to the National Finals, where five of the best DJs in Canada will compete for the title of the Best Party Rocker. The winner will be moving onto the Red Bull Thre3style World Finals and representing Canada in Chicago, IL in September.
The Format
How these DJs will get to the Red Bull Thre3style World Final remains the same: Take talented DJs from across Canada, add 15 minutes of DJing, mix it in with three musical genres, bring flair, originality and swagger and you got a Red Bull Thre3style Champion!
Headlining the National Finals is none other than Hip Hop Legend DJ Jazzy Jeff. Known for his unique old-school sound and classic DJing style, DJ Jazzy Jeff has been putting out mixtapes and productions since 1896, not only making him a household name in Hip Hop but a DJ with a musical style unlike anybody else. The History of Red Bull Thre3style
The original concept of Red Bull Thre3style began six years ago as a Tuesday night experiment at a small club in Kelowna, BC. With a steady supply of Red Bull, the concept found its wings in 2007 and became a fully-fledged DJ battle. The event had a regional focus and took place in six cities across Canada. Red Bull Thre3style is the foremost DJ competition where skill, technique, and originality, crammed into 3 genres and 15 minutes, make up the winner. Participants have to showcase their technical skills as well as keep the party going. Participants have to play a selection of at least three genres or styles of music in 15 minutes. It doesn't matter what genres of music are chosen so long as the DJ can make them work together.
In 2008, Red Bull Thre3style exploded with ten regional qualifiers throughout Canada. Local contests took place in Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, and Victoria. The finals took place at CiRCA in Toronto and it was Halifax's DJ Cosmo, an old school meets new-school alchemist, who clinched the title.
In 2010, the event made its way across the pond for the first time, arriving in Paris, France at the Élysée Montmartre. Ten DJs from around the globe took Red BullThre3style to the best level by bringing the best in the world to the forefront. In the end, is was Paris's own DJ kArve who wowed the judges, consisting of heavyweights such as DJ Jazzy Jeff and DJ Craze, with his impressive collage of bass-heavy, head-nodding mixes.
2011 saw Red Bull Thre3style as a homecoming as the World Finals were held in Vancouver, BC, coming back to the very province that started it all. Eighteen DJs from as far as New Zealand and Japan came to the West Coast of Canada to battle for the title of Red Bull Thre3style World Champion. Canada reigned supreme as hometown hero; DJ Hedpsin took the title with his flair for catchy samples, classic Hip Hop, and stage presence. If last year's event was anything to go by then Red Bull Thre3style 2012 is guaranteed to send the Canadian DJing scene spinning like a record on a turntable.
