MONTREAL, Sept. 8, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - The organizers of the Marathon de Sport de Montreal announced that the event held today at the College Notre-Dame's sports facilities raised just over $60,000. The amount is equally divided between Special Olympics Quebec and Special Olympics Canada.
Over 200 people participated in the event along with hockey players Louis Leblanc and Mathieu Darche, ex-football player Steve Charbonneau, as well as two-time judo Olympic medalist Nicolas Gill.
18 teams of eight to twelve participants from a same company or group took part in six sports: soccer, kick-ball, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, ball-hockey and relay racing. In addition, each team boasted in its ranks an athlete from the Special Olympics Quebec program.
In total, the Marathon de Sport de Montreal has raised over $110,000 in 2011 and 2012.
First held in Toronto 10 years ago, the Marathon of Sport is a fundraising event benefitting Special Olympics Canada, a national organization created in 1969 that has provided positive, successful experiences through sport for thousands of Canadians with an intellectual disability. Special Olympics Canada has successfully registered 34,000 Canadians of all ages and abilities and more than 14,600 volunteers, including over 13,000 trained coaches. The Marathon of Sport is also presented in Halifax, Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver.
