MONTREAL, Sept. 20, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - The Sun Life Building, owned by Sun Life Financial and Ivanhoé Cambridge and managed by Bentall Kennedy, has been awarded the prestigious Prix du patrimoine commercial 2013 (2013 Commercial Heritage Award), which is presented jointly by the Ville de Montréal and Héritage Montréal as part of the 23rd edition of the Montréal architectural heritage campaign. The campaign, created in 1991, is designed to educate and emphasize the importance of protecting Montréal's built heritage and recognize efforts to maintain properties.
"This award represents a great honour in recognition of the Sun Life Building and the preservation of Montréal's heritage. We are proud to have our 1,800 employees thrive within a historical building of architectural prestige," said Isabelle Hudon, President, Sun Life Financial, Quebec.
Located in downtown Montreal, the Building stands 26 stories high and includes over 1,100,000 square feet of leasable space. Built in 19th century neoclassical style, in three phases between 1914 and 1933, the Building's distinct structure features four main graduated levels entirely covered in Stanstead granite, with its façade including an impressive Corinthian colonnade mounted on an elegant balustrade carved from raw stone.
"The unique and magnificent architectural signature of the Sun Life Building lends a great deal of prestige to our portfolio of real estate holdings in Quebec," said Claude Sirois, Co-Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President, Quebec at Ivanhoe Cambridge. "This award not only attests to the past splendour of this majestic office complex, but also to the outstanding efforts carried out on a daily basis to ensure the enhancement and preservation of the building."
The building underwent an initial rejuvenation at the end of the 1980s, with the replacement of its 1,600 exterior windows and extensive cleaning of the Building's exterior, in addition to renovations on all of the office floors. Most recently, the building was equipped with industry-leading telecommunications infrastructures and technical facilities, all of which comply with the highest environmental standards.
Bentall Kennedy's Mario Bedard, Senior Vice President of Quebec and the Maritimes added, "Over the past several years, Bentall Kennedy has undertaken a continuous effort to improve and upgrade the building's facilities and infrastructures, with full support from the owners of the Sun Life Building. On the eve of its 100th Anniversary, the Sun Life Building is a shining example of a 21st Century structure."
