With new crew member Yann Perreau - Third edition of this huge maritime celebration
MONTREAL, Aug. 28, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - For the third straight year, some majestic Tall Ships® will be dropping anchor in the Old Port of Montréal, from September 13 to 16, for four days of festivities. There's a great line-up of free daytime and evening activities for all ages: concerts, street performers, fun for budding mariners in the Young Sailors' District, water games, face-painting for tots, the Pirate's Cabaret and three evenings of fabulous fireworks.
The whole Jacques Cartier Quay will be given over to the Maritime Village, a festive space lined with shops and restaurants, featuring over 40 tents for visitors, sailors, exhibitors, artists, musicians and street performers.
The event drew more than 300,000 visitors for the first two editions, and has now become an essential stop for families, and sailing, navigation, heritage and history buffs.
A new crew member: Yann Perreau
The Tall Ships® are proud to welcome an all-new crew member aboard: singer-songwriter-composer Yann Perreau. He is a multidisciplinary artist, passionate about his craft, whose originality, energy and explosive stage presence have made him one of the leading artists of his generation. Above all he is someone whose lyrics and music open new frontiers, giving his audiences a taste for travel, a desire to explore the world and make new friends - just as the Tall Ships do!
"I grew up near the St. Lawrence, so ships always inspired me and fuelled my dreams. The tall ships, for me, evoke the ocean and far-off places, sources of inspiration for me. So when I was asked to be the spokesperson for this great event, I jumped at the chance!", smiles Yann Perreau. In fact, he will be giving a show on Saturday, September 15, at 6 p.m.
For its 3rd edition, the Tall Ships® festival will be welcoming five magnificent vessels, including the two-masted Roter Sand, the very first sail training vessel with an environmental mission in Quebec. The splendid vessels that visitors can admire this year all have one thing in common: they all teach sailing to young people, an excellent way of developing their leadership and team spirit.
The fleet consists of five tall ships, three of them (*) visiting Montréal for the first time:
Peacemaker* | USA | 46 m | Sail training vessel, three-masted schooner with 10,000 ft² of sail area |
|||
Roter Sand* | Canada | 27 m | Gaff-rigged ketch. ÉcoMaris.org made this the first sail training vessel with an environmental mission in Quebec |
|||
Fair Jeanne* | Canada | 34 m | Sail training vessel for young sailors ages 14 to 19, school groups and cultural outings for seniors |
|||
Pathfinder | Canada | 22 m | Brigantine-rigged sail training vessel, trains 200 students/year |
|||
St. Lawrence Il | Canada | 22 m | Sail training vessel for crews ages 13 to 18 |
The Tall Ships® will be moored at the Jacques Cartier Quay in the Old Port for the entire event. Sailing and history buffs who would like to tour them and meet their enthusiastic crews can pick up a passport allowing them aboard. One of the highlights of the event is the arrival of these majestic vessels, welcomed by a cannon salute. The spectacular sail-past will take place at noon on September 13.
Furthermore, especially for the event, visitors can relax at the Clock Tower Beach, free of charge, on September 15 and 16 2012.

How to get there
There's plenty of parking in Old Montréal and the Old Port of Montréal, on the Alexandra, King Edward and Clock Tower Quays. Given the large crowds expected for this event, however, we recommend that visitors choose public transit: «Smooth sailing to the Old Port aboard the 715.»
Our thanks to the partners of the 2012 Edition of the Tall Ships®: SDC Vieux-Montréal, the Canadian Wildlife Federation, Presenter of the Navigators' District, Van Houtte, Presenter of the Maritime Tales, and Laurentian Bank, Presenter of the Young Sailors' District.
The Old Port also wishes to acknowledge the support of its institutional partners: TELUS, Sleeman, Coca-Cola and its main partner, the Government of Canada.
Don't miss this exceptional maritime experience - and in the meantime, may the winds always be with you!
