The Teamsters Women's Caucus opposes the abolition of firearms registration
Doing away with Gun Registry will have an adverse effect on the safety of Canadian citizens…
LAVAL, QC, Sept. 3 /CNW Telbec/ - The Teamsters Women's Caucus categorically opposes the abolition of firearms registration.
As we know, the Conservative party has decided to put this important issue on the legislative agenda. They also placed a death warrant on it.
The Teamsters Women's Caucus, along with all of the women's and victims' rights organizations, as well as the police forces, and experts in safety and public health, believes that the abolition of the law will have an adverse effect on the safety of Canadian citizens.
"There is no doubt in my mind that the Conservatives do not understand the concerns of women in this regard," explains Brigitte Sottile, president of the Quebec Teamsters Women's Caucus. "We therefore ask all of the political parties not to support the Conservatives' proposal."
We know that the Conservative party is trying, by means of a bill filed by MP Candice Hoeppner of Manitoba, to abolish the obligation to register long-guns in the national firearms registry.
Last November, Stephen Harper's MPs succeeded in having a private member bill proposing the abolition of registering long-guns such as hunting rifles. The modification passed on the second reading, thanks to the support of eight liberal MPs and 12 neo-Democrats.
"Canadian citizens have less than one month to act," concludes Brigitte Sottile. "We invite them to write to their MPs urging them to vote against Ms. Hoeppner's bill."
The Teamsters Union represents 125,000 members in Canada in all trades. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with which Teamsters Canada is affiliated, has 1.4 million members in North America.
