The Transportation Infrastructure Industry Recognizes The Miller Group for its Environmental Leadership and Green Construction Practices
TORONTO, April 22, 2013 /CNW/ - The Ontario Road Builders' Association (ORBA), in partnership with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and the Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA), is pleased to announce the Miller Group as the winner of the 2013 ORBA Green Leadership and Sustainability Award.
The ORBA Green Leadership and Sustainability Award was established in 2010 to recognize environmental leadership and sustainability measures in the construction of Ontario's transportation infrastructure. It recognizes contractors who go beyond the scope of requirement on a specific project or develop innovative ways and means of carrying out business activities in support of the objective of environmental protection and sustainability. The award can recognize new products, new equipment, new management, or construction means and methods that promote sustainability.
"ORBA is pleased to congratulate the Miller Group as the winner of the 2013 ORBA Green Award," said ORBA President John Blake. "Miller Group clearly demonstrated its forward thinking and innovative approaches to implementing environmentally sustainable construction practices, and earned the recognition for its corporate commitment to pursuing innovations that contribute to responsible environmental management."
"Municipalities are consistently striving to improve their environmental stewardship and reduce their carbon footprint," said Joanne Vanderheyden, President of the OGRA. "Their work with the transportation infrastructure builders in the province, in this case with the Miller Group, to improve sustainability practices while also improving municipal infrastructure is a critical factor to ensuring the long-term environmental health and economic viability of our province."
The Miller Group received the Award for its research and development on uses for Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) materials in pavement processes where RAP materials had not traditionally been considered. This initiative led to the development of three new products which eliminate the need to use virgin aggregate materials and decrease the need for new asphalt cement within the cold recycling, graded seal, and slurry seal product streams in road construction.
The products result in lower impact on the physical environment and a reduced carbon footprint in the construction process through reducing freight and construction fuel usage. The associated simplification of the construction process in the cold recycling procedure also increases the efficiency of the overall construction process, resulting in reduced traffic disruption.
The Miller Group, as the winner of the 2013 ORBA Green Leadership and Sustainability Award, will be recognized at the 2014 ORBA Convention for their commitment to green leadership and environmental sustainability.
