The Université du Québec en Outaouais and the Canadian Museum of Civilization
become partners in museology

GATINEAU, QC, Sept. 13 /CNW/ - The Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO) and its École multidisciplinaire de l'image (ÉMI) have signed an agreement with the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) to train students for the school's new Museology and Heritage program. As part of the French-only course, Musée : éducation et publics  (Museum: Education and Audiences), the Museum will provide students with education that is on a par with the Museum's reputation in the field.

In the fall 2010 term, UQO students will benefit from an academic experience within the walls of Canada's most popular museum, profiting from the expertise of Museum staff. Students will be able to develop first hand knowledge of museology, based on current professional practices and experiences.

"This wonderful opportunity is an example of the synergy between the Université and its partners that allows for the development of academic and professional excellence," said Éric Langlois, a professor and researcher in cybermuseology at the UQO. "The museology training offered at the UQO is the only undergraduate program of its kind in Canada. Here again, the National Capital Region stands out for the scope of its expertise in the field."

"Our Museum's expertise will contribute to the development of museology and reach out beyond our walls," said Jean-Marc Blais, Vice President, Exhibitions and Programs at the CMC. "This is the first collaboration of its kind between the Museum of Civilization and the Université du Québec en Outaouais, as well as being a first, in Quebec, in terms of cooperation between a museum and a university. We are, justifiably, extremely proud of the initiative."

The Museology and Heritage program prepares students to take on a variety of roles in the vast field of museums and heritage, from collections management to communications, administration to education. The program encourages students to become critically and creatively involved, and to develop the theoretical approaches and practical skills required by creative professionals, galleries and heritage institutions.

The Canadian Museum of Civilization and the Université du Québec en Outaouais hope that this partnership will incite other cultural and academic institutions throughout the country to establish similar initiatives.
