TORONTO, Jan. 30, 2013 /CNW/ - The Valley Park Go Green Cricket Field project is holding its first Cricket Coaches' Training Clinic on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7-9 pm at Valley Park Middle School starting on Tuesday Feb. 26.
Its Youth Sports Academy's new Cricket Centre for Excellence is looking for male and female adult and youth coaches ages 17 and up, for what will be its first six-week course. People must register by Monday Feb. 11 and then will be interviewed and selected to participate. Local participants from the Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park neighbourhoods with prior coaching experience are preferred.
Selected candidates must be prepared to volunteer a couple of evenings a week and on weekends for at least one year with the new Youth Sports Academy to be accepted into the course. Candidates must also be committed to attend every Tuesday and Thursday evening session of the six week course so that they can emerge well versed in the Centre for Excellence's expectations and with the appropriate leadership and coaching skills. The new Cricket Centre for Excellence will organize local youth programming, which will start indoors this spring in the VPMS gym, and then move outdoors this fall, when the new ground is open and ready for play.
"We are so happy to get to the point where we are mobilizing programming and training coaches," said Lisa Grogan-Green, Project co-chair. Construction on the new field starts this April and will be completed in July 2013. The grass will then be protected this summer so that it can withstand the heavy play it will receive from enthusiastic local participants.
Youth and adults must register for the coaches clinic through the project website www.gogreencricketfield.ca by the deadline of Monday Feb. 11.
