Therapia will use the funding to grow roster of physiotherapists and expand across the country
TORONTO, March 29, 2017 /CNW/ - Today Therapia, the online platform for on-demand at-home physiotherapy, announced that it has closed a seed funding round of $750,000. The platform helps solve the barriers of finding a therapist, getting to and from appointments, and completing physiotherapy treatments after an injury or surgery. Therapia will use the funding to grow their network of physiotherapists in the Greater Toronto Area, with plans to expand across the country within the next two years, starting with the Vancouver market. The funding round was led by a group of stakeholders in the healthcare space including Dr. Anthony Romeo, who is in the presidential line for the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons society and a surgeon for the Chicago White Sox.
"Technology has really changed the way we interact with our healthcare providers, and Therapia is just one example of how healthcare is moving into the home," said Dr. Anthony Romeo. "We invested in Therapia because we recognize the potential the platform has to not only improve the patient experience, but to ensure that all North Americans have access to affordable and accessible physiotherapy."
Therapia was founded by six entrepreneurs with various backgrounds in healthcare and technology who came together to solve the largest friction point in a patient's lifecycle: when they leave the doctor or hospital, and are left to complete their course of treatment. The founders saw firsthand the barriers that exist for patients, including proximity to clinics, reliance on family members or friends to drive to and from appointments, and the cost - both time and money - of getting to and from the clinic.
"Healthcare is moving into the home and we've seen a growing demand for a service like Therapia in the GTA," said Adam Brown, registered physiotherapist and co-founder of Therapia. "Feedback from the healthcare industry has been overwhelmingly positive, and we plan to use this funding to grow our network here, and to bring Therapia to more Canadians."
New patients can book a physio appointment by going to therapia.life, entering their details and location, and selecting from a curated list of physiotherapists with varying specialities. Therapia's team of physiotherapists are registered and in good standing with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario, and are thoroughly vetted by the Therapia team. Patients pay for their appointments online, often paying less than the cost of a clinic visit, and can rate their physiotherapist from 1 to 5 after their appointment.
Therapia's platform is ideal for anyone recovering from surgery or injury, whether they have muscle or back pain, an athletic injury, joint replacements, or are recovering from strokes or other similar conditions. The platform allows physiotherapists to teach patients how to best use their surroundings to help aid their recovery, and therapists have found that patient recovery is more successful when treatment is done in the home compared to the clinic. Currently, Therapia is available in the Great Toronto Area with plans to expand across the country within the next two years.
