Third Annual Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day closes the loop by informing post-mastectomy women about reconstruction in 12 cities across Canada

TORONTO, Oct. 15, 2013 /CNW/ - Breast cancer is the most common cancer amongst Canadian women with one in nine expected to develop the disease during their lifetime. Many women diagnosed with breast cancer undergo a mastectomy; a surgery that can result in psychosocial issues around body image, self esteem and sexuality. Lack of awareness and access to information remains a significant issue with only 1 in 10 opting for breast reconstruction surgery, a fully insured medical procedure in Canada.

Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day is an initiative designed to address this issue by promoting education and awareness. On October 16th, community-based events across the country as well as a live video stream (www.bra-day.com) will connect medical professionals and post-reconstructive patients with women considering post-mastectomy breast reconstruction.

BRA Day events also offer women the opportunity to go beyond the 'before and after' photos thanks to innovative Show & Tell Lounges; separate areas where women show the results of their reconstruction and share their experiences in a comfortable setting.
