This Earth Hour, the equivalent of all Airdrie and Calgary households will be bullfrogpowered with green electricity thanks to CrossIron Mills
CALGARY, March 23, 2017 /CNW/ - For this year's Earth Hour (Saturday, March 25), Bullfrog Power, Canada's leading green energy provider, and CrossIron Mills Shopping Centre are teaming up to provide enough renewable energy to bullfrogpower every home in Airdrie and Calgary for one hour. Through the agreement, CrossIron Mills will purchase 481 MWh of green electricity from Bullfrog Power—equivalent to what 469,025 households in Airdrie and Calgary would use in one hour.1 CrossIron Mills is one of seven Ivanhoé Cambridge shopping centres participating in Earth Hour events with Bullfrog Power. Together, they are bullfrogpowering the equivalent of more than 1.9 million households across Canada during Earth Hour.
"At CrossIron Mills, we are always investigating several community based programs and initiatives that will reflect our core values and beliefs—and those of the community we call home," said James Moller, General Manager, CrossIron Mills. "This Earth Hour, we're proud to be partnering with Bullfrog Power to ensure that an equivalent amount of green electricity goes onto the grid to match what every household in Airdrie and Calgary would use in an hour."
CrossIron Mills also bullfrogpowers 35 per cent of its common areas with green electricity. That means that Bullfrog Power's generators put clean, pollution-free electricity onto the grid to match the amount of conventional power used by 35 per cent of CrossIron Mills' common areas. Across Canada, Bullfrog Power's green electricity comes from a blend of wind and low-impact hydro power sourced from new Canadian renewable energy facilities.
"By bullfrogpowering the equivalent of every Airdrie and Calgary household for Earth Hour, CrossIron Mills is demonstrating an action we can all take to address climate change: choosing green energy," said Anthony Santilli, VP Sales and Marketing, Bullfrog Power. "As a result of its green energy commitment, CrossIron Mills is both supporting renewable energy and the development of new community-based renewable energy projects across Canada."
Earth Hour is WWF's global environmental movement. Born in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has grown to become the world's largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring individuals, communities, businesses and organizations in more than 170 countries and territories to take tangible climate action for over a decade. The movement recognizes the role of individuals in changing climate change and harnesses the collective power of its millions of supporters to shine a light on climate action.
"Earth Hour is meant to spark meaningful changes to tackle climate change, including in our own homes," says David Miller, President and CEO, WWF-Canada. "It's an opportunity to focus on solutions and making the transition to renewable energy is something we must and can do."
In addition to Earth Hour activities and choosing Bullfrog Power's green energy, CrossIron Mills' sustainability accomplishments include:
- Three cisterns have been constructed underneath the parking lot to store one million litres of the harvested rainwater.
- More than 620,000-square-feet of landscaped area has been irrigated by our three storm management cisterns that harvest up to one million liters of rainwater at a time.
- CrossIron Mills has a white membrane roof which reflects heat and reduces interior cooling requirements.
- Over 40 per cent of CrossIron Mills' waste is diverted from the landfill by way of recycling cans, cardboard, and plastics throughout the mall.
- CrossIron Mills has diverted 23 tonnes of organic materials from going to the landfill through its Organics Recycling program.
