This week's "weather bomb" prompts swift action by organizers and Haligonians to save Light The Night Walk
Expected high winds and heavy rains for this Saturday force The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada to redirect 2,000+ participants
HALIFAX, Oct. 18, 2018 /CNW/ - The system that brought damaging winds and heavy rain to Atlantic provinces earlier this week is expected to remain active bringing high winds and a lot more rain this Saturday forcing organizers to move the 8th annual Light The Night Walk to the following Saturday, October 27.
"We are prepared for adverse weather when it comes to our Light The Night Walk, but we also want to make sure our participants are safe and comfortable," explains Trudy Dyer, Atlantic Regional Director at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. "We're thankful to our event partners, sponsors, participants, volunteers and the community for keeping Light The Night a priority despite the widespread impact of this active weather."
On Saturday, October 27, over 2,000 people are still expected to gather at Garrison Grounds to take part in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada's Light The Night Walk in Halifax. At twilight, patients, families, researchers and physicians will walk in solidarity with lanterns raised to bring help and hope to the more than 138,000 Canadians affected by blood cancers.
Canadians like Dartmouth resident, Cole Myers and his family, will be among those attending this unique event where the entire blood cancer community comes together to celebrate, remember and light the way to a world without blood cancers.
"I did not want pity, did not feel sorry for myself, and recognized my situation for what it was – another challenge in life that I had to face and overcome," says Cole, a Hodgkin lymphoma patient.
In 2017, over 35,000 Canadians raised over $5.8 million to help fund world-class Canadian research and provide support services at no cost to thousands of blood cancer patients, survivors and their families.
At the Light The Night Walk in Halifax, Cole will join thousands of others at this singular gathering of the blood cancer community, alongside event chair Glenn Bowie. The event is family-friendly and will feature some local entertainment, food trucks, fireworks and kids zone.
