CHARLOTTETOWN, Jan. 1, 2014 /CNW/ - Prince Edward Islanders and visitors alike turned out in droves last evening to ring in the New Year and officially kick off the PEI 2014 Celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the historic 1864 Charlottetown Conference. Thousands of people were on hand for the PEI 2014 New Year's Eve Outdoor Celebration along historic Great George Street and in front of Province House National Historic Site. A few blocks away over 2,500 more packed into the PEI Convention Centre to see Canadian music superstar Johnny Reid and PEI's own Lennie Gallant ring in this important celebration year.
Those taking part in the PEI 2014 New Year's Eve Outdoor Celebration were treated to a magical evening which included performances by East Coast Music talents Rawlins Cross and Meaghan Blanchard, world class buskers, an ice garden created by members of the Canadian Ice Sculpting Team, children's activities, wagon rides, and one of the largest fireworks displays in Atlantic Canada.
In 2014, Canadians will mark the 150th anniversary (Sesquicentennial) of the historic 1864 Charlottetown Conference, which paved the way to Confederation. PEI 2014 Inc. is facilitating the planning, promotion and implementation of the Sesquicentennial celebrations. The PEI 2014 celebrations are made possible through generous support from the Government of Canada, Government of Prince Edward Island, and the City of Charlottetown. The year-long and province-wide PEI 2014 program of events will honour the past, celebrate the present and plan a bold tomorrow.
