Tides Canada Launches "Strange Bedfellows" Campaign: Says Canada Works Better When Canada Works Together
TORONTO, June 27, 2012 /CNW/ - One of Canada's leading environmental and social justice charities today launched a new campaign to highlight the good things that can happen when diverse interests come together to solve problems.
Speaking at the Economic Club of Canada, Tides Canada CEO Ross McMillan said that charities play a critical role in Canadian democracy, bringing pressing issues and potential solutions forward to Canadians.
"Canada works better when Canada works together," said McMillan. "Through our new campaign, we hope to highlight how powerful it is when strange bedfellows come together to help create durable solutions that really work for Canada."
McMillan called for a more reasoned and inclusive public discussion on complex issues, such as resource development, climate change and other social and environmental challenges.
"Over the last decade, Tides Canada has been honoured to play a role in helping forest companies, governments, First Nations and environmentalists move from rhetoric to reconciliation," said McMillan. "Today, among other activities, we hope to help the country move beyond the polarization that characterizes current energy development conversations."
As part of its campaign, Tides Canada today launched a new video, its 2011 annual report and a microsite with an interactive graphic that takes visitors on a journey through Tides Canada's community. The annual report includes more detail on Tides Canada's grants, activities and sources of funding than in previous years.
"We are always striving to be more effective, efficient and open," said McMillan. "We hope the more Canadians know about our work across the full spectrum of social and environmental issues, the more they will want to join us in strengthening those efforts."
Imagine Canada, the national association of charities and non-profits, recently accredited Tides Canada under a new Standards Program that recognizes excellence in governance, management and transparency for charities and non-profits.
