Founder of Evergreen to Receive Tiffany Mark Award
TORONTO, Nov. 29 /CNW/ - Andrea Hopson, Vice-President, Tiffany & Co. Canada, has announced that Mr. Geoff Cape will be the recipient of the 2010 Tiffany Mark Award to be presented at a private cocktail celebration at the Tiffany & Co. Canadian flagship store on Bloor Street West in Toronto on December 7th. The Tiffany Mark Award honours men and women who are making their "mark" professionally and in their community through tireless efforts on behalf of charities and organizations they care about deeply.
Mr. Cape is the founder and Executive Director of Evergreen, a not-for-profit Canadian organization that explores the relationship between nature and our urban environments and works to integrate nature in urban design to make our cities more livable. Since 1990, Mr. Cape has led Evergreen in its efforts to improve the health of our cities and empower Canadians to take a hands-on approach to creating and sustaining healthy, dynamic outdoor spaces in their schools, communities and homes. At its simplest, Evergreen's mission is, "to bring communities and nature together for the benefit of both." Under Mr. Cape's leadership, Evergreen now has offices in Toronto and Vancouver and more than 100 committed employees.
Of great excitement to Torontonians, under Mr. Cape's direction Evergreen has developed Toronto's historic and neglected Don Valley Brick Works, in the heart of the Toronto ravine system, as an international centre for green cities and the study of global environmental issues and as an environmental community centre. More than 200,000 square feet of buildings and 41 acres of industrial quarry lands in the heart of Toronto have been restored. Evergreen Brick Works offers year-round programs and activities that include a farmer's market, youth leadership and children's camps, a sustainable garden centre, demonstration gardens and family programming.
A founding member of the World Entrepreneurship Forum and a participant at the World Economic Forum, Mr. Cape is founding Chair of the Sustainability Network. He was recognized as one of Canada's "Top 40 Under 40" and a "Sr. Ashoka Fellow" and he received the Peter F. Drucker Award, and the Governor General's "Golden Jubilee Medal" for his contributions to the building of a fair and just Canadian society. In 2007 Mr. Cape was named "Canadian Social Entrepreneur of the Year" by the Schwab Foundation. He is a public speaker on urban space planning and themes related to social innovation.
A graduate of Queens University and McGill University, Mr. Cape lives in Toronto with his wife Valerie Laflamme and their three young sons, Thomas, Benjamin and Sebastian. He cycles to work.
