Toronto Hydro's 12 Days of Christmas will bring joy and savings to all

TORONTO, Dec. 6, 2013 /CNW/ - The first of December officially launches the season for giving.  Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited (Toronto Hydro) is giving customers ideas on how to save money and time. As people gather to celebrate they'll be looking for ways to save a penny or two.  Each day, beginning December 9, Toronto Hydro's 12 Days of Christmas will showcase a no/low cook recipe (perfect for entertaining) or a green holiday decorating idea.  Recipe cards, instruction sheets and even some how-to videos will be posted on torontohydro.com/holidays, @torontohydro and Facebook.com/torontohydro.

One of the ways to stay on Santa's good list is to do what's best for the environment - using LED lights is one of the easiest ways to conserve electricity. Here are some more holiday conservation tips:

• Use timers on holiday lights to avoid leaving them on around the clock.  They also make the home look occupied when no one is home. Download coupons at torontohydro.com/coupons
• Take advantage of Off-Peak hours December 25, 26 and January 1. Time meal preparation and holiday lighting around Off-Peak hours to save.
• When entertaining friends and family, lower your thermostat a degree or two. With the additional body heat, you'll save energy while keeping your home comfortable.

And, because safety is Toronto Hydro's first priority, it's reminding customers to stay safe this winter season.

• Using LED lights are not only more efficient, they remain cool to the touch so they're safer for pets and kids, and reduce the chance of a fire.
• When buying new electrical holiday decorations ensure products are approved for use in Ontario.
• Replace damaged electrical products including cords, lights and decorations.
• Never remove the third prong from the plug of any electrical product — this is a "grounding pin" that works to prevent electric shock in the event of electrical equipment failure.
