'Tis the season to brush up on winter driving skills
THORNHILL, ON, Nov. 26, 2013 /CNW/ - Driving in the snow, slush and ice takes a change in mindset and technique, that's why CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) recommends keeping these tips in mind to safely get you where you are going.
What you need to do:
- Check your local weather forecast
- Plan your route and give yourself extra travel time
- Dress for the weather
- Remove all the snow and ice from your vehicle
- Top up windshield washer fluid
- Drive according to the road conditions
- Give yourself extra braking distance
- Be alert behind the wheel
"Remember to slow down in the snow, leave extra space between vehicles and never pass a snowplow," said Silvana Aceto, Media Relations & PR Consultant, CAA SCO.
Snowplow safety tips:
- Leave room for snowplows
- Remain a safe distance back
- Never pass a snowplow
Be prepared for the unexpected this winter season, pack an emergency kit.
Keep the following in your vehicle:
- Ice scraper and snow brush
- Snow shovel
- Windshield washer fluid
- Booster cables
- Blankets
- Extra clothing and footwear
- Flashlight and batteries
- Bottled water
- Granola or energy bars
- First aid kit
- Smart phone and charger
