TLN Announces Record-Breaking TV Audiences for Multilingual World Cup Soccer
2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ attracts
nearly 2.7 million Canadians on TLN channel alone – so far!
TORONTO, July 8, 2014 /CNW/ - TLN announced today that going into the final week's matches of the month long tournament, nearly 2.7 million Canadians have tuned in to some or all of TLN's coverage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™. Broadcasts in Spanish and Italian of live matches, plus evening prime time "match of the day" broadcasts, have been TLN's most successful single program acquisition in its 30 year history.
TLN President, Aldo Di Felice observed, "We are proud to have pioneered the regular broadcast of international soccer in Canada since 1984. The popularity of this tournament demonstrates the growth of soccer culture in Canada." Mr. Di Felice also noted, "The reported numbers have been great and don't even represent the total audiences across all our channels, since only the TLN channel itself is measured by the audience ratings service. Univision Canada and Mediaset Italia, our flagship all-Spanish and all-Italian language channels, are not included in those numbers." Both of those channels are running all 64 matches of the tournament in their respective languages.
The recently launched Univision Canada, which debuted on May 5th coinciding with Cinco de Mayo, is available on all major carriers in Canada in over 1.8 million homes. As well, Mediaset Italia expanded its national carriage earlier this year and is currently seen in 4 million homes on the Rogers, Bell and Fibe systems. In addition, TLN's EuroWorld Sport channel has featured Portuguese language broadcasts of all of the Brazil and Portugal team matches.
