TORONTO, Nov. 21, 2012 /CNW/ - For the third straight year, TELUS Corporation captured top honours at the Corporate Reporting Awards, presented annually by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA).
The awards have recognized the best reporting practices in the country for more than 60 years and honour both Canadian corporations and Crown organizations. TELUS has now won the top prize five of the past six years.
"This is a very impressive run for TELUS and it clearly demonstrates the company's commitment to best practices in corporate reporting," said Kevin Dancey, FCA, president and CEO of the CICA. "If this were a professional sport, you would be looking at a dynasty fuelled by foresight and a dedication to continuous improvement."
TELUS collected two awards and two honourable mentions at the gala event in Toronto. In addition to the Overall Award of Excellence, the company captured the Communications and Media industry award along with Honourable Mentions for Sustainable Development Reporting and Corporate Governance Disclosure.
"At TELUS, we strive to continually raise the bar in terms of the quality and value of our stakeholder disclosures and it is gratifying to be recognized for our efforts by the CICA. We are particularly honoured to have received the top award for five of the past six years and it is a testament to the quality and dedication of the external reporting team at TELUS who produce such a best-in-class product," said Robert McFarlane, TELUS executive vice-president and CFO. "I also appreciate the many volunteer judges and supporting organizations that make this important awards event and feedback program possible. Their constructive input has been very valuable over the years and encourages us to continue innovating and enhancing how we communicate each year."
PotashCorp was the only other multiple winner collecting the Mining category honour and the Award of Excellence for Financial Reporting. In total, 22 awards and honourable mentions were presented at the event.
"These are the most prestigious and coveted national awards of their kind in Canada," stressed Shelley Brown, FCA, chair, CICA Board of Directors. "The competing organizations strive to be the best when it comes to presenting information in a relevant, understandable and reliable way. Congratulations to all the winners and participants."
The goal of the awards program, organized by the CICA on behalf of the CA profession, is to enhance the quality of corporate and financial reporting in Canada. A publication profiling comments from the judges about the winning entries is available online (www.cica.ca/cra).
