Next Stop: WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017
MONCTON, June 8, 2016 /CNW/ - (Skills Canada National Competition) – For two days in Moncton, at the 22nd Skills Canada National Competition, the best and brightest students and apprentices in skilled trades and technologies from across the country were tried, tested and judged. Today they received official recognition for their outstanding performance as Skills Canada announced the results of the 2016 Skills Canada National Competition. The Closing Ceremony was held at the Moncton Wesleyan Celebration Center and was highlighted by the announcement of the competition winners.

The Skills Canada National Competition is the only national multi-trade and technology event of its kind for young students and apprentices in the country. This event draws competitors from every province and territory. The competitors are evaluated based on industry standards. Over 200 medals were awarded to the top industry champions in six skilled trade or technology sectors including transportation, construction, manufacturing, information and technology, service and employment.
"The goal of this annual competition is to recognize the excellence of young Canadians in the skilled trades and technologies", said Shaun Thorson, Chief Executive Officer, Skills/Compétences Canada. During SCNC, several celebrities attended and participated in the various Try-A-Trade and Technology®activities alongside over 7,500 visiting students from all over the Atlantic region. This included Mike Holmes Jr., Sherry Holmes, Paul Lafrance and Kate Campbell, Stars of HGTV, and Line Pelletier, Celebrity Chef. They were onsite to raise awareness of the incredible opportunities available in the skilled trades and technologies and encourage youth to get involved in these sectors.
This is also a qualifying year for WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017. The WorldSkills Team Canada 2017 Prospects were announced at the Closing Ceremony. They will have the opportunity to qualify to be a part of WorldSkills Team Canada 2017 and compete at the 44th WorldSkills Competition, in Abu Dhabi, in October 2017. The four-day WorldSkills Competition is the biggest of its kind in the world and considered the pinnacle of excellence in skilled trades and technologies training.
The next Skills Canada National Competition will be held in Winnipeg, Manitoba May 31 to June 3, 2017.

About the Skills Canada National Competition
The Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) is the only national, multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprentices in the country. This year, the competition was open to the public June 6 and 7, 2016 at the Moncton Coliseum in Moncton, New Brunswick.
