Toronto Basketball Stars Face Off in Ultimate Playoff Beard Battle
– Pros DeMarre Carroll and Cory Joseph compete for best beard rights in charity effort from WAHL® Canada –
TORONTO, April 13, 2017 /CNW/ -- The illustrious "Playoff Beard" is one of sport's most superstitious practices—and now it's turning into an epic fundraising effort. This postseason, Toronto's DeMarre Carroll and Cory Joseph are putting their beards to the test in a whisker war for a good cause. The Wahl Beard Battle, a new initiative from men's grooming leader Wahl Canada, features the two teammates engaging in a four-week beard-growing competition to raise money for charity. The loser will be subjected to a friendly, high-profile punishment.
"We couldn't be more thrilled to have two of Canada's best beard ambassadors joining Wahl for what will certainly be a fun and spirited beard battle this post-season," said Frank Brown, President of Wahl Canada. "There's a certain brotherhood and camaraderie that comes with growing a beard, and thanks to our new partnership with DeMarre and Cory, it's also about giving back."
The Wahl Beard Battle supports The Carroll Family Foundation (CFF), a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the prevention and treatment of adolescents suffering from pediatric liver disease and disorders, which affects 10 percent of children.
Fans and supporters can help the cause—and ensure their favorite player is on the winning end of the Beard Battle—by casting their vote via Facebook. Fans who follow the players' updates on Wahl Canada's Facebook page now through May 8 can vote on their beard progress photos, which will be posted each week. For every vote, Wahl Canada will donate $1, up to $10,000. The battle concludes on May 8 at 11:59 p.m. EST, and the player with the most total votes will be named the winner. Supporters can also follow Wahl Canada's Twitter page (@wahlcanada) for the latest developments.
To kick off the Wahl Beard Battle, Wahl hosted a shave-down event for the players at ColdKutz, a Toronto barbershop, on April 10. At the event, Joseph and Carroll talked about the ensuing battle and engaged in some friendly "trash talking," all while having their beards trimmed down. Watch the video from the shave-down event.
