Toronto Hydro Encourages Torontonians to Get Prepared and Stay Safe
TORONTO, May 10, 2012 /CNW/ - Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited ("Toronto Hydro") is reminding Torontonians to make an emergency plan this Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week), a national awareness initiative that has taken place annually since 1996.
This year, EP Week began on May 6 and ends on May 12. Toronto Hydro encourages city residents to get prepared with their friends and family by re-visiting emergency plans and stocking up on their survival kits. As a helpful reminder, residents should be prepared to cope without assistance for at least the first 72 hours of an emergency.
Building a family emergency plan is simple and easy online at www.GetPrepared.gc.ca/EPweek
When building your power out plan and emergency kit, remember:
- Keep it in an easy to access location known to all family members.
- Check batteries twice a year.
- Ensure that you have at least one cell phone or non-cordless telephone.
- Have a list of emergency contact numbers handy.
- Don't forget your pets! Have identification on your animals and enough pet food and water in your emergency kit for at least three days.

This week is also North American Occupational Health and Safety (NAOSH) Week. NAOSH Week is an annual event led by the Canadian Society of Safety Engineers (CSSE) and Toronto Hydro participates in this initiative with events at all its worksites. Toronto Hydro wants to remind residents how important the prevention of illness and injury are in the workplace, at home and their community.
