Shut the door! Turn down the AC! Close the blinds!
TORONTO, July 18, 2013 /CNW/ - As the conversation continues to be about how hot it is, Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited ("Toronto Hydro") will also continue to nag customers to conserve where they can.
When this heat wave and summer is behind us - and high electricity bills come in - customers will have forgotten that their AC's were working overtime.
Toronto Hydro is asking both business and residential customers to cut back on electricity use to alleviate the sustained pressure on its equipment, but also to help customers manage their bills. Both peaksaver and voluntary commercial demand response programs will be activated today.
Last Thursday (July 11), peak demand was 3,453 MW at noon.
Here's a breakdown of how the city's demand for electricity has changed this week:
Monday: 4,497 MW at 5:30 p.m.
Tuesday: 4,574 MW at 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday: 4,855 MW at 4:49 p.m. (breaking last year's record)
At noon today, demand was at 4,679 MW.
The highest record to date was set in July 2006 when the city's demand peaked at 5,018 MW.
Preaching to the converted
A round of applause for the more than 70,000 peaksaver customers. They have helped the city in reducing peak load on Toronto Hydro's system this week. When peaksaver is activated, approximately 40 MW is taken off the grid.
There are similar programs for business customers, and with their participation, it could move that number to 150 MW.
