Toronto Hydro Preparation for Hurricane Sandy - Update #2
TORONTO, Oct. 29, 2012 /CNW/ - As power outage calls start to come in, Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited (Toronto Hydro) continues implementing emergency protocols in response to weather-related power outages. Current outages are sporadic and affecting the overhead wires. The utility continues to monitor weather patterns and advisories issued by Environment Canada.
Safety of residents and employees is a top priority and will be the first consideration as Toronto Hydro responds to outages. The combination of saturated ground, residual leaves on trees, and strong winds will likely lead to fallen limbs and downed trees resulting in power outages across the city. If customers come across damaged utility poles or see downed power lines they should stay clear (at least 10 metres back) as they may be energized. Electrical emergencies and power outages should be reported as soon as possible to Toronto Hydro at 416-542-8000.
Additional call centre staff is in place and our call centre will now be open for the next 24 hours. Additional materials and equipment have been prepared. Extra repair and forestry crews have been assigned to respond to outages as required through the night.
It is important to note that the wind speeds may make it impossible for crews to repair our overhead equipment safely from a bucket. Crews will respond to localized outages and if they cannot be fixed, will make the area safe and return when the winds die down.
Toronto Hydro is ramping up crews to start in the early morning once a complete damage assessment has been obtained and the high winds have died down making work safer for staff.
Toronto Hydro will also be restoring outages that affect the greatest number of customers first. Localized outages affecting one or two houses will be a secondary priority.
Customers can expect continuous updates from Toronto Hydro via Twitter (@TorontoHydro), on torontohydro.com, and through the media. A voice message update is also available should customers wish to call 416-542-8000.
A reminder to customers without power, please do not assume that Toronto Hydro is aware. Report outages by calling 416-542-8000.
