Toronto Hydro shares its top five tips to 'Play Safe' this summer
TORONTO, June 27, 2014 /CNW/ - Today, ringing school bells signal a break from class for kids and the beginning of summer vacation. While summer is the season for swimming and outdoor fun, Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited ("Toronto Hydro") urges everyone to play safe and learn to identify potential electrical hazards.
Children of all ages are curious by nature and need to be aware of electrical dangers. Teaching them about electrical safety and following these five tips can help keep kids safe and prevent electrical accidents.
Play Safe with Toronto Hydro's top five tips for summer safety:
- Look up, look down, look around – Before you work or play, take a few minutes to evaluate your surroundings. Look above, below and around your area to spot potential hazards.
- Never climb trees or fly kites near power lines – Keep balloons, kites or any other flying objects away from overhead power lines. Never attempt to retrieve or touch any object that has come into contact with a live wire and always look for hidden power lines covered by tree branches.
- Water and electricity do not mix – Keep all electrical devices away from water. Electricity and water are mortal enemies and danger is present when they come in contact. It's important that electrically-powered devices aren't used around swimming pools or lakes.
- Don't climb or play near electrical equipment – The green transformer boxes you see on the street contain electrical equipment and should be avoided at all times. Find a safe location to play away from electrical equipment.
- Remind mom and dad to watch out for power lines and electrical equipment too –Whether they're climbing a ladder or digging in the backyard, make sure mom and dad are aware of potential hazards too.
