Toronto Hydro's Pet Safety Week 2014 - A Tip a Day to Keep Your Pets Safe

TORONTO, Oct. 23, 2014 /CNW/ - As part of Pet Safety Week - October 20 - 26, Toronto Hydro and the Toronto Humane Society are teaming up to share simple safety tips to help keep your furry friends safe from potential dangers year-round. 

Today's Tip: Protect your pet from Contact Voltage

As a pet owner, it's important to be educated on how to keep your pet safe. Contact voltage is an intermittent condition that exists when electricity or voltage is present on street equipment. Help your pet avoid and step around electrical equipment, including streetlighting poles, handwells, decorative lighting, signage and shelters. Here are some ways to help protect yourself and your pet while out on a walk:

1. Walk your pet close to the storefront and stay clear of streetlighting
2. Use a leash that's made of non-conductive material, preferably nylon
3. Don't tie your leash to street poles or near handwells
