Toronto Taste Raises Funds to Provide 1.9M Meals
Top culinary talent helps support annual Second Harvest fundraiser
TORONTO, June 7, 2018 /CNW/ - On Sunday, June 3, 2018, Toronto's landmark culinary event, Toronto Taste, raised enough funds to provide over 1.9 million meals for those experiencing food insecurity in the city. The proceeds help Second Harvest, Canada's largest food rescue charity, rescue and deliver fresh food to 253 social service agency partners.
"In one night: over 70 chefs; 30 beverage purveyors; 60 sponsors; 400 volunteers and 1,500 guests came together to raise funds in support of Second Harvest," said Debra Lawson, Executive Director, Second Harvest. "We're so thankful for, and incredibly proud of, the community which has supported us over the past 28 years and held our mission as close to their hearts as it is to ours."
Over the past 7 years, celebrity chef, Bob Blumer, has been donating dinners at his home in the Hollywood Hills to the event's live auction. The funds raised from Bob opening his home each year have allowed for the purchase of a new delivery truck, a cost of $175,000. This year, he presented the keys to the truck to Executive Director, Debra Lawson, on stage.
Event Recap:
Guests sampled dishes from the city's best culinary talent, including titleholders from Canada's 100 Best Restaurants 2018: La Banane (Best New Restaurant), Café Boulud (No. 42 Best Restaurant), Grey Gardens (N. 43 Best Restaurant).
During the Live Auction, well-deserving guests took home prizes such as a private dinner party for five guests, complete with wine pairings, personally prepared by Top Chef Canada contestant, Ivana Raca. Other winners took home a Day Trip for Two to the 2019 US Masters via private jet, a 10-day river boat cruise from Budapest to Prague, a $5,000 gift certificate to Knar Jewellery and more.
For the past 23 years, The Daniels Corporation has been steadfast in their support of Second Harvest as Presenting Sponsor of Toronto Taste. They understand the impact food has on a community and share in the belief that good food shouldn't go to waste while people in our city go hungry every day.
