Toronto Taste, The Culinary Extravaganza, Returns for its 29th Year
Second Harvest's annual fundraiser rallies the city's top chefs to support food rescue
TORONTO, March 25, 2019 /CNW/ - Toronto's original, premier culinary event kicks off the summer in spectacular fashion. Toronto Taste, presented by The Daniels Corporation, will take place on Sunday, June 9, 2019, bringing the very best of the city's food scene together for a vintage circus-inspired evening at Evergreen Brick Works.
Applauded as the longest-standing and highest calibre food event in the city, Toronto Taste is the major annual fundraiser for Second Harvest, Canada's largest food rescue charity. Now in its 29th year, Toronto Taste continually attracts the city's top culinary talent who come together to support Second Harvest, donating their time and the exquisite food they prepare. In 2018, Second Harvest rescued and delivered 12.3 million pounds of fresh, surplus food to more than 370 community organizations.
"The impact this one night has on the lives of so many is incredible, and we are grateful to Toronto's restaurant community and our sponsors who contribute so much to make Toronto Taste such a success," says Lori Nikkel, CEO, Second Harvest. "This year we are hoping to raise enough money to rescue and deliver 2 million meals to support Toronto's most vulnerable with the food they need to be healthy. Rescuing surplus food also protects the environment from the damaging greenhouse gases released by food when it goes into landfill – it's a win for all of us."
This year's event features a curated lineup of 50 of Toronto's top chefs and 15 premium beverage purveyors. Guests will dine on unlimited bites from the city's most sought-after establishments as they roam the chef-studded affair. More than a dozen new restaurants and chefs will join returning favourites like Brandon Olsen (La Banane), and Carl Heinrich (Richmond Station) and 29-year Toronto Taste supporter Mark McEwan (Bymark),
New restaurants participating this year include:
- Aloette – French diner favourites from Chef Patrick Kriss; chosen as one of Canada's best new restaurants
- Don Alfonso 1890 – The first North American location of the Michelin-starred Amalfi coast restaurant from Chefs Alfonso and Ernesto Iaccarino, headed by Executive Chef Saverio Macri
- Kiin – Toronto's queen of Thai cuisine, Nuit Regular, brings her Royal Thai fare to Toronto Taste
- Bobbette & Belle – Sweet perfection on the plate and palate from noted artisanal bakers Sarah Bell and Allyson Bobbitt
"Second Harvest's work in food recovery is vital to the communities where we live. We've been proud supporters of Toronto Taste for 24 years because this amazing night has a triple impact – it's a culinary celebration beyond compare, an investment in the health of our city and helps to protect the environment we all share," says Don Pugh, Vice President, The Daniels Corporation, presenting sponsor of Toronto Taste.
Along with delicious food and beverage, the evening will include exceptional fine wine, silent and live auctions. An action-packed Chef Challenge will see three notable chefs face off on the main stage as they each prepare a dish from a box of mystery ingredients. Circus themed entertainment and activations will transform Evergreen Brick Works into a legendary extravaganza to further amaze and delight guests, making this year's event unlike any before it.
Since 1991, Toronto Taste has raised over $13 million in support of Second Harvest's food rescue program. The event has enabled the organization to rescue enough fresh, surplus food to support hundreds of social service agencies across the GTA with more than 32 million meals for children, adults and seniors experiencing hunger in our city.
All-inclusive tickets are on sale now at a cost of $260 each, including a $150 tax receipt. Every ticket sold enables Second Harvest to rescue and deliver enough food to provide over 520 meals.
