CALGARY, July 4, 2013 /CNW/ - On the day before the start of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, Tourism Calgary will launch a regional and national marketing campaign that will run for three weeks and let travellers know that Calgary's attractions, restaurants, hotels and festivals are ready to host the world this summer.

In a collaboration with Travel Alberta and the Calgary Hotel Association, Tourism Calgary will be sharing an inviting message that "Calgary's Doors are Open" across the country through radio, newspapers, online advertising, social media and public relations. The campaign features Mayor Naheed Nenshi who has been nationally recognized for his steadfast and inspirational leadership throughout the crisis.
"Our community was pushed down, and we are pulling her back up. You'll want to see what this community has accomplished," said Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi. "You'll get a chance to experience the energy of these streets, our great festivals, events and experiences. Summer is the time you want to be here. Come and visit Calgary - our doors are open."
Thursday June 20, 2013 saw flood waters overwhelm Calgary's Bow and Elbow rivers and run unabated through neighbourhoods adjacent to the rivers including the downtown core and Stampede Park. Many downtown hotels were closed for days due to power outages.
On July 4, just two weeks after the flood, The City of Calgary prepares to lift the state of emergency by the end of the day, and all but one of the city's hotels are open as are the vast majority of Calgary's signature experiences, restaurants and attractions (with the Calgary Zoo re-opening in stages starting July 31).
"The summer tourism season is critical for a tourism industry that employs one in 10 working Calgarians and contributes $1.4 billion in spending to local businesses," said Tourism Calgary CEO, Cindy Ady.
Travellers will be directed to Tourism Calgary's website, visitcalgary.com, to learn more about Calgary's experiences and how to book a vacation this summer. Calgary's tourism businesses will be encouraged to join a conversation through the social media hashtag #yycisopen to share their stories, offers and experiences.
