TPA Renews Commitment To Green Electricity
TORONTO, May 31, 2013 /CNW/ - Toronto Port Authority (TPA) today announced that it will continue to choose 100 per cent green electricity for its facilities with Bullfrog Power®, Canada's 100 per cent green energy provider. Reaffirming its mandate as a waterfront steward, TPA has committed to choosing renewable energy to reduce its environmental impact.
"For more than 100 years, TPA has been committed to environmental leadership," said Geoffrey Wilson, TPA President and CEO. "With more than two million people and businesses using our various facilities each year, we are always looking for ways to reduce our environmental footprint and make our operations more sustainable so that Toronto's waterfront can be enjoyed for generations to come."
TPA has chosen green energy since 2010 and is among the largest buyers of renewable energy in Canada, purchasing 13,745 MWh (megawatt hours) a year. Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, the Port of Toronto and Outer Harbour Marina are the only operations of their kind in the nation that choose Bullfrog Power. TPA's green energy commitment complements its broader sustainability strategy, which includes keeping the harbour clean by removing an average of 400 tonnes of debris, silt and driftwood from the waterfront every year, and working closely with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority on a fish habitat at Tommy Thompson Park.
Through the agreement, Bullfrog Power's generators inject renewable electricity onto the grid to match the amount of power TPA uses. Bullfrog's electricity comes exclusively from wind and hydro facilities that have been certified as low impact by Environment Canada under its EcoLogoM program—instead of from polluting sources like coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear. Bullfrog Power uses the collective demand of its customers to support the development of green energy projects in Canada.
"By choosing green energy with Bullfrog Power, TPA is reducing its footprint and helping raise awareness about climate change among the millions of people who use its facilities each year," said Anthony Santilli, Vice President, Sales, Bullfrog Power.
