Trails Open Ontario 2010 promotes province's vast trail systems
TORONTO, June 5 /CNW/ - Today is International Trails Day and Trails Open Ontario will once again showcase Ontario's remarkable natural heritage by featuring several free special events. Many of the province's trail systems, programs and organizations are participating in this year's program.
"We are delighted to be working in partnership with trail organizations, communities and volunteers across the province to present Trails Open Ontario 2010," said Dr. Thomas H.B. Symons, Chairman of the Ontario Heritage Trust. "Through this exciting initiative, more Ontarians than ever before can access and celebrate our extraordinary natural landscapes and discover more about natural heritage conservation."
Some of today's special events include: a guided tour of the St. Clair River Trail, allowing participants to experience the unique character of Bluewaterland (Port Lambton); a 28-kilometre (17.4-mile) roundtrip cycling tour through farmland and forests along the Train Trail from Collingwood to Stayner (Collingwood); and a hike along the Tay Shore Trail, providing an opportunity to examine local flora and fauna with a skilled naturalist/ecologist (Victoria Harbour).
Trails Open Ontario is designed to promote trail use and education, support natural heritage conservation and stewardship, and encourage physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. In addition to guided hikes, several of the participating trail systems and organizations are coordinating free activities, such as trail dedication ceremonies, community festivals, barbeques and educational workshops. With over 80 events planned thus far, Ontarians in every corner of the province will have access to a variety of recreational opportunities on Ontario's 88,000 kilometres (54,680 miles) of trails.
