BADDECK, NS, Aug. 9, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, announced that Transport Canada has accepted the Baddeck Lions Club procedures for operating its shuttle boat service between Baddeck, Nova Scotia and Kidston Island, a popular swimming and picnicking area on Bras d'Or Lake.
"I'm very pleased that this long-standing service will be able to continue to operate and serve the people of the area into the future," said Minister Raitt. "This is a great example of how Transport Canada is working with the community while ensuring that safety is always the number one priority."
Transport Canada has authorized continuation of the service, with conditions, for the next five years. For example, conditions require that the operator must be at least 18 years of age and hold qualifications including First Aid and Radio Operator, and success in a practical Marine Emergency Duties examination. Among other conditions are requirements for familiarization training, safety briefings for passengers, and limited voyages (Baddeck to Kidston Island).
Baddeck Lions Club spokesperson, Dan Chiasson thanked Transport Canada, on behalf of the community of Baddeck and the surrounding area, for working collaboratively with the Lions Club for the past several years to ensure a satisfactory resolution.
"The continuation of the service shows that when the main concern is safety, we can all work together to do the right thing," said Mr. Chiasson.
The decision will enable the summer shuttle boat service to continue through to the summer of 2018, after which the term can be renewed.
