Agreement
ONIGAMING, ON, March 24 /CNW/ - The Chiefs of six Grand Council Treaty No. 3 First Nations and R. Kim Tyler, President of Canadian Arrow Mines Limited (CRO: the "Company") today signed an Exploration Agreement committing to an ongoing relationship between the First Nations and the Company with respect to Canadian Arrow's exploration activities within the traditional territory of the First Nations.
The participating First Nations include Big Grassy River First Nation, Northwest Angle No. 33 First Nation, Northwest Angle No. 37 First Nation, Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation, Naotkamegwanning First Nation, and Wauzhushk Onigum First Nation. The agreement was also signed by Anishinaabeg of Kabapikotawangag Resource Council (AKRC) which will provide implementation coordination on behalf of the First Nations.
The Exploration Agreement establishes the processes to ensure an ongoing positive relationship between the First Nations and Canadian Arrow. In return for their consent for the exploration activities to proceed, the First Nations and their members will be afforded opportunities to secure employment and business contracts related to the exploration activities and will be compensated for the interference the exploration activities will have on their aboriginal and Treaty rights.
"This agreement demonstrates that our First Nations are committed to working in a positive and creative way with companies pursuing developments in our traditional territory in a manner that achieves our respective objectives." said host Onigaming First Nation, Chief Norman Copenace. "This agreement provides assurances that the project will be implemented in a manner that protects the environment and our lands while at the same time providing benefits to our people and assurances of our support to the company shareholders."
The President of Canadian Arrow Kim Tyler agreed. "We believe that our future together will be bright and we look forward to working together with the First Nations we will have in this project. We see this Exploration Agreement as the beginning of a positive and continuing relationship with the First Nations".
George Kakeway, Executive Director of AKRC, noted the importance of the Canadian Arrow agreement for all Grand Council Treaty No. 3 First Nations. "This agreement is a precedent for how we expect all companies seeking to work in our traditional territories to engage with our First Nations. It is a clear signal to other companies that we are not anti-development and that our clear support is only an agreement away."
