Three experts on issues of importance to Canadians share $775,000 in awards
MONTREAL, 16 Sept. 2014 /CNW/ - Today, the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation will announce the three recipients of its prestigious research award. Nominated by their peers and selected by an independent jury, these public intellectuals stand out for their achievements, their creativity, and their commitment to working on global food security, children born of rape in conflict zones, and the future of Indigenous peoples in Canada – some of the most complex issues of importance to Canada and the world today.
Meet the 2014 Trudeau fellows:
- Myriam Denov, School of Social Work, McGill University: Professor Denov works on the conditions and the prospects of children born of rape in Northern Uganda and other conflict zones. Grounded in one-on-one work with former child soldiers and with the soldiers' own children, Professor Denov's Trudeau project will inform Canada's programs for youth and families attempting to resettle after surviving war.
- Evan Fraser, Department of Geography, University of Guelph: A global expert in food security, Professor Fraser raises awareness of the social and environmental consequences of food price volatility and looks for ways to reduce waste in global food systems. Well connected to Canada's corporate sector and civil society, Professor Fraser's Trudeau project will inform public policy at a time when population growth and climate change are making food supply increasingly precarious.
- Jason Edward Lewis, Department of Design and Computation Arts, Concordia University: Building on his work with First Nations high school students on the Mohawk reserve of Khanawake, Professor Lewis' Trudeau project will launch a residency program in which Indigenous youth will lead the drive to imagine a prosperous future for Indigenous communities using interactive media and a network of Canadian scholars, creators, businesspeople, technologists, and cultural and political leaders.
Morris Rosenberg, president and CEO of the Foundation, emphasized the value of the Trudeau fellowship and the excellence of the recipients' Trudeau projects: "The 2014 Trudeau fellowships will give some of Canada's most innovative and committed public intellectuals time, financial support, and access to a deep network, so that they can further their vision of a safer, more secure, and more equitable world."
At a reception at the Trudeau Foundation on Thursday 18 September at noon, the 2014 Trudeau fellows will present their Trudeau projects and explain how their fellowship will further their discoveries and their public purpose.
About the Trudeau fellowship
The Trudeau fellowship is worth $225,000, payable over three years. Its recipients are academics and public intellectuals who have set themselves apart through their research achievements, their creativity, and their commitment to public affairs. Trudeau fellows commit to communicating their ideas and research through speaking engagements and by participating in the Foundation's Public Interaction Program; the fellowship gives fellows and their university access to a network of outstanding scholars and seasoned policymakers as well as to Foundation events. Trudeau fellows are appointed for life.
About the Foundation
The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation is an independent and non-partisan charity established in 2001 as a living memorial to the former prime minister by his family, friends, and colleagues. In 2002, with the unanimous support of the House of Commons, the Government of Canada endowed the Foundation with the Advanced Research in the Humanities and Human Sciences Fund. The Foundation also benefits from private donations. By granting doctoral scholarships, awarding fellowships, appointing mentors, and holding public events, the Foundation encourages critical reflection and action in four areas important to Canadians: human rights and dignity, responsible citizenship, Canada's role in the world, and people and their natural environment.
