TORONTO, Feb. 28, 2013 /CNW/ - In celebration of Canada Water Week, March 18 - 24, TVO presents TVO Water Week, a lineup of water-themed programming and original online content aimed at raising awareness around water issues. TVO Water Week is presented in partnership with Canada Water Week and sponsored by Conservation Ontario.
A highlight of the week is a public screening event taking place March 20 at Toronto's Bloor Hot Docs Cinema. Hosted by TVO's Ian Brown, the screening marks the second installment in the TVO Doc Studio Screening Series, for which Toronto Life is the exclusive media partner. The night offers a double-bill of thought-provoking documentaries and a panel discussion following each film. Tickets to this fundraising event are $10 and can be purchased at tvo.org/docstudioscreeningseries.
"TVO's Water Week will tap into the social, political, economic and environmental issues surrounding water quality and availability," says Nancy Chapelle, TVO's Managing Director of Content and Programming. "Through our multi-platform content and the TVO Doc Studio Screening Series event, we want to help generate an important conversation about the world's most precious resource and our relationship with it."
Opening the TVO Doc Studio Screening Series event is a new episode from the TVO-commissioned documentary-adventure series, The Water Brothers. In "No Woman, No Water," intrepid Ontario filmmakers Tyler and Alex Mifflin travel to the most water-scarce regions of Tanzania and Kenya with WaterCan to learn first-hand about the global water crisis and climb Mount Kilimanjaro to help raise money for water sanitation projects across East Africa. The episode offers a preview of the show's second season which premieres this fall on TVO. The Mifflin brothers will be joined by Ben Mulroney, WaterCan's national ambassador, in the post-film discussion.
The night's second film is the Canadian premiere of Superfish: Bluefin Tuna, in which marine biologist and Emmy award-winning filmmaker Rick Rosenthal documents the elusive bluefin tuna. One of the largest, fastest and most migratory fish in the sea, the bluefin tuna is rapidly being threatened by extinction. Following the film, Rosenthal will take to the stage to discuss the dangers of over-fishing.

TVO's Water Week Programming
From Monday March 18 through Sunday March 24, TVO presents a week of water-themed documentaries. Hosted by TVO's The Water Brothers, the films highlight water's central role in human existence and explore a range of issues including pollution, climate change, access and privatization. TVO's flagship current affairs program, The Agenda with Steve Paikin, as well as TVOKids, will also support the week with special programs.

Secrets of the Mediterranean: Cousteau's Lost World (TVO Premiere)
Monday March 18 at 7 pm
Famed explorer Jacques Cousteau's youngest son retraces his father's footsteps, diving into the Mediterranean with marine ecologist Enric Sala to compare the ocean today with imagery first captured by his father more than half a century ago. Cousteau had warned that pollution and overfishing would destroy the fragile sea. Now, the new generation of explorers will discover how the Mediterranean has changed.
Superfish: Bluefin Tuna (Canadian broadcast premiere)
Thursday March 21 at 7 pm and repeated at 10 pm
Following the film's theatrical premiere as part of the TVO Doc Studio Screening Series, TVO offers two opportunities to catch the documentary on air. Also this evening at 8 pm, The Agenda with Steve Paikin examines why Ontario's water levels are so low.
Rowing the Arctic (North American Premiere)
Friday March 22 at 7 pm
Scottish adventurer Jock Wishart attempts to row to the geomagnetic North Pole, 20 years after being part of the first team to walk to the pole unsupported. While two decades have seen ice sheets disappear to the extent that makes rowing possible, the journey is far from easy. But Jock is determined to demonstrate why climate change should matter to everyone.
National Geographic: Blue Holes - Diving the Labyrinth (TVO Premiere)
Saturday March 23 at 7 pm
A team of extreme cave divers and scientists risk their lives to explore the Bahamas' remarkable Blue Holes - flooded caves containing the earth's first life forms as well as the fossils of long extinct animals and even ancient humans.
The Water Brothers Marathon
Sunday March 24, 7-10 pm
Review all six half-hour episodes from the first season. Tyler and Alex Mifflin take viewers around the world, from the massive coral reef system in Central America and Mexico, to the mighty Mekong River in South East Asia, and back to a water processing facility in their home town of Toronto. Prior to the marathon, watch for a special appearance by the brothers in TVOKids' afterschool block, The Space, on Tuesday March 19 between 4 and 5 pm. The brothers will answer questions from kids live on air.

As well, look for Lake Effect: How the Power of Water Shaped Ontario, a special interactive feature that tells the story of the geological formation of the Great Lakes. Using illustrations spanning 15,000 years of natural history and appearing as a time-lapse video, Lake Effect demonstrates how the lakes were initially formed; the impact of the glaciers on the Great Lakes; and the patterns of human settlement along the lakes.
And on March 22, coinciding with World Water Day, download a newly enhanced version of the free mobile app Quench Toronto from TVO's The Water Brothers. The app allows users to locate the nearest water fountain or water bottle refill location in the Greater Toronto Area.
